Facedown bed for Vitrectomy

How am I going to sleep facing down all the time?

Sopanha Sann

That’s where the face down bed comes in.

Sleeping face down after eye surgery can feel nearly impossible without the right support — especially when recovering from a vitrectomy or retinal detachment.

Sleep will make up nearly 40% of your day during recovery, between moments of watching TV, eating, reading, or listening to podcasts. This essential recovery equipment supports your body and helps maintain face down positioning during naps, overnight sleep, or anytime you're not using a chair.

What Is a Face Down Bed?

A face down bed is essentially a massage table, just like the ones you'd see at a spa. It works amazing helping patients sleep while maintaining proper face down positioning after eye surgery.

Bed Specifications

1.5" or 3" MEMORY FOAM & Exclusive Small Cell™ Foam (Higher Density than normal foam)

Two sizes available to suit different body types:

    • Standard: 28" wide x 84" long (supports up to 1,200 lbs)

    • Large: 31" wide x 84" long (supports up to 1,500 lbs)

Removable Armrest/ Electronic devices holder: Most patients prefer to have a small table or ottoman placed underneath for armrest or computer, tablet, smartphone stand.

Height adjustable: from 24" to 34" to match your surroundings.

With the help of a few pillows tucked under key pressure points (under ankles, hips, or chest), you can sleep face down comfortably and safely — without straining your neck or back.

RecovRentals offers both table sizes depending on your needs.

Where should you place the Facedown Bed?

Being able to switch positions during recovery is very important. Most people go back and forth between the face down chair and the face down bed to avoid getting sore or stiff.

🌤️ During the Day

Many patients set up the bed in the living room during the day. This way, you can:

  • Spend 2–3 hours lying face down on the bed

  • Then switch to the chair for another 2–3 hours

Changing positions throughout the day helps prevent back/neck pain and stiffness. But the key is to always stay in the face down position, even when switching between the two.

🌙 At Night

You can fold the bed and move it to your bedroom. Sleeping in a quiet, dark room helps your body rest better.

⚠️ The bed weighs about 35 pounds. Please ask someone to move it for you. You shouldn’t lift anything during your recovery.

☀️ Extra Tip

If the weather is nice, you can also place the bed on your backyard patio or deck. It’s a great way to relax outdoors while still following your doctor’s instructions.
